Cruelty & Sexism in Christanity

To the uninformed observer, religion does not appear to be harmful. In fact, many non-religious people will claim that religion is beneficial to those that follow it.
I have often heard, “It’s not religion, it’s the people that make it corrupt.”
This is not the case at all. Being a former strong Christian, I know that there is very damaging verses in the Bible that degrade women and homosexuals and promote slavery. I have read them. It tells people to put most of their energy into the afterlife, robbing them of their one and only life here. Let us not forget that, despite Jesus’ commandments of love and forgiveness, in The Book of Acts we read early on of Ananias and Sapphira being struck dead by God because they lied in the church.
This is just one example in the New Testament, which instructs us to study from the violent and prejudiced teachings of the Old Testament. But let us not even dabble into the dark, violence-driven verses allegedly written in the Bronze Age or earlier (Ha). Jesus even spoke of cruelty amidst his lessons and teachings of love and forgiveness. Oh, how it pains me to even write this. How I loved Jesus for preaching what He did. Early in my deconversion, I would still defend him. Even though he was just a man, he was by far a good one who taught such profound things in an era where prejudice and violence abounded all over the world.
I write about this not to be contentious (I wouldn’t want to be that. The Bible rebukes stupid contentious women….) I do this in hopes to open up even one person’s eyes to the lies that we have been fed by religion, namely, Christianity. Don’t even get me started on Catholicism. That is another post for another day.
Christianity is harmful in and of itself, and it is no wonder that people who live by it often become bigots and believe things that make no sense.
Cruelty in the New Testament
Here are just a few verses to illustrate:
Jesus approves of the law and the prophets. He hasn’t the slightest objection to the cruelties of the Old Testament. Matthew 5:17
Jesus condemns entire cities to dreadful deaths and to the eternal torment of hell because they didn’t care for his preaching. Matthew 11:20-24
Those who fail to bear “good fruit” will be “hewn down, and cast into the fire.” Luke 3:9
People are damned or saved depending only on what they believe. John 3:18, 36
Homosexuals (those “without natural affection”) and their supporters (those “that have pleasure in them”) are “worthy of death”. Looks like this was not just in the Old Testament. Romans 1:31-32
While we’re at it, apparently David – a killer and a serial adulterer – was called “a man after [God’s] own heart” in Acts 13:22.
Sexism in the Old Testament
Oh, I can’t even believe that I was part of a religion that had this smut in its book! I read this nonsense so many times and I wanted to blame it all on Paul and Timothy (The alleged writers) being idiots, but every Pastor I had just enjoyed bringng these verses to light and rubbing in the fact that they had dicks so God viewed them as some kind of superior being.
Brace yourself!
1 Corinthians 11:3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman [is] the man; and the head of Christ [is] God.
1 Corinthians 11:7 – 9* 7 For a man indeed ought not to cover [his] head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
8 For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man.
9 Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
Ephesians 5:22 – 25
22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so [let] the wives [be] to their own husbands in every thing.
25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
1 Timothy 2:9 – 15
9. In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
Genesis 3:16. Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire [shall be] to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
