Nothing blows my mind more than thinking too long about the origin of the universe. I can understand how everything came to be after the Big Bang, but it’s how the whole “Big Bang” came to be that gets me every time.
Okay, here’s something that gives me (and probably you) goosebumps:
(Taken from the National Geographic website under the topic “Origins of the Universe”):
“Before the big bang, scientists believe, the entire vastness of the observable universe, including all of its matter and radiation, was compressed into a hot, dense mass just a few millimeters across.”
Nooooo! It’s just almost too much for my mind to handle. I mean, wow.
But this is what really gets me (Taken from the same web page):
“This nearly incomprehensible state is theorized to have existed for just a fraction of the first second of time.”
“Big bang proponents suggest that some 10 billion to 20 billion years ago, a massive blast allowed all the universe’s known matter and energy—even space and time themselves—to spring from some ancient and unknown type of energy.”
What?! Unknown type of energy! Gah. It drives me crazy just trying to imagine all of this. Sometimes, when I think about it for too long, I wonder… if it’s not crazy to imagine that there was some form of energy that existed on its own, without a creator – why is it so crazy to think that God formed the Universe?
Sorry. Christian flashback.
Then I remember that God would have had to come from nothing as well, at some point. Leading one to the same question. It keeps going in circles.
Christianity says that God always existed, that there was an eternity past. Science says that the universe formed from a bundle of energy roughly the size of a pebble (That somehow always existed?) and then quickly expanded into the universe (To put it simply).
I suppose it’s something we will never truly understand. But I want to know how this energy even came to be. Where did this two milimeter bundle of energy come from? How could it have formed from nothing? To think that everything that exists now came from something that was once the size of something smaller than your fingernail is nothing short of mind bending.
The previously mentioned article also says:
“The big bang theory leaves several major questions unanswered. One is the original cause of the big bang itself. Several answers have been proposed to address this fundamental question, but none has been proven—and even adequately testing them has proven to be a formidable challenge.”
Yes, but even if the cause of the big bang was discovered… where did the original pebble of energy come from? Aaaaahhhh!!!
Oh, it is curiosity that cannot be satisifed.
